In the second half of the 1870s, N.S. Leskov actively published in the moderateconservative newspaper-magazine Grazhdanin. Leskov’s letters indicate that he was
preparing to participate in the weekly from its first year of publication (1872), but
no real traces of collaboration have been found. This study establishes the fact that
Leskov authored two journalistic “Notes” (Grazhdanin, 1872, no. 3, January 17). The
first note raises the issue of preserving historical memory (including the loss of church
values) and reveals the process of establishing a historical society in Kiev, following
the example of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The writer’s interest in archeology (in
both its highly specialized and broad cultural senses), which first appeared at that
time, was then continued in his work and indicated a long-maturing need to engage
with the lessons of history, thereby bringing the issue of Russian society’s inadequate
historical education to the forefront. In the second note, Leskov returns to the idea
of popularizing the spiritual and literary heritage of Bishop Innokenty (Borisov),
whose heritage caused an ambiguous reaction from official church circles. At the same
time, Leskov revealed the fact of commercialization of this circumstance by the book
publisher Wolf, which put this note in a series of public statements by the writer against
speculation in the field of book publishing and bookselling.
