The article analyzes the structure, content and artistic features of Kirill Turovsky’s
“Words for the New Week on Easter or Anti-Easter.” The author reveals the
multifaceted composition of the work, reflecting Kirill’s diverse and multidimensional
thinking using a traditional set of rhetorical techniques. Noting the connection of the
Old Russian speaker with the unified Greek-Byzantine and South Slavic kallological
tradition, the researcher compares Kirill’s oratory with such Russian masters of the
word as Metropolitan Hilarion, Metropolitan Cyprian and Epiphanius the Wise,
emphasizing the common features in their literary manner. Like them, the Turovsky
speaker used single-handedness, enumerative constructions, phrasal, lexical and
morphological repetitions, semantic and pictorial antitheses, syntactic parallelism
and rhythmization of the verbal flow, biblical and gymnographic images, quotations,
allusions, paraphrases, dramatic form of an appeal to the gospel story. In general, the
article reveals the meaning of the “Word for Antipascha” as an outstanding literary and
theological work.
