The article examines the transformation of the literary and pictorial image of
the “dead beauty” in two films by E. Bauer: After Death (1915, film adaptation of
I.S. Turgenev’s 1883 story Clara Militch) and Dreams (1915, others title Deceived
Dreams, film adaptation of G. Rodenbach’s 1892 story Bruges-la-Morte). The research
relies on the history of the literary plot about the “dead bride / beauty” (the myth of
Orpheus and Eurydice, folk tales, Russian classical and symbolist literature, Pre-
Raphaelites’ and fin de siècle culture), and the history of the aestheticized image
of female death in painting. The article pays particular attention to the images of the
“dead beauty” in two works, later filmed by E. Bauer: the stories by I.S. Turgenev Clara
Militch, and G. Rodenbach Bruges-la-Morte and their features that attracted E. Bauer —
the director, who, unlike his contemporaries, did little to film the classics. The article
examines Bauer’s handling of symbolist or pre-symbolist text, and the way in which
Bauer, often called a “women’s director,” interprets female symbolic images, breathing
life into them, modernizing them, and exploring psychology but also adapting them to
a mass audience. The article gives the context of other films by E. Bauer in which the
image of a dead woman appears.
